MEET SETH MAY
Seth May, the founder and CEO of SDMTEC, is a third generation AV industry expert.
Phil Clark, Seth’s grandfather, received his electrical engineering degree from Syracuse U, after which he started his own Audio design company in upstate New York. From the outset he began to push the envelope on what was possible - not only on the integration side, but also in partnerships with manufacturers to improve equipment and what could be done with it. He was instrumental in the initial formation of Syn-Aud-Con (prosoundtraining.com) and became a well respected name in the industry throughout his career.
David May, Seth’s father, started out as an apprentice to Phil and from there took the helm of the company ultimately leading the next phase of growth in the company. Through his leadership, the company became more specialized in crafting audio systems known for high functioning operability, intelligibility and longevity. He too gained recognition in the AV world and would be tapped to be part of a team lead by Renkus Heinz to design and develop beam steerable speakers, known by the name ICONYX.
Both Phil and David fostered an underlying passion in Seth that would eventually be a foundation in his career: The vision, to continue the legacy of intentionally partnering with clients crafting custom audio, video and control solutions that prop up organizational vision and eliminate barriers to goals achieved. The standard of excellence that was instilled in Seth can be traced back through the previous generations and continues to be a core value of SDMTEC.
Seth’s earliest memories of working in the industry begin around 8 years of age, assembling speakers at the family company. He would continue through high school assisting around the shop and with installs and rentals up until college. After finishing college, Seth joined the company full-time and where he eventually held the position of Install Manager. In this role he oversaw audio and video system installations for presentation and performance in various spaces: from traditional cathedrals to contemporary houses of worship, educational spaces to performance venues, US District Courthouses, and many more.
After relocating to California in 2011 Seth accepted a Production Manager/Technical Director position, which continued to expand his realm of expertise to include the touring side of the AV world. Along the way Seth began receiving requests for AV work both locally and across the country, leading to the formation of a side project, SDMay Solutions, in 2014.
Helping organizations optimize, strategize, build and/or upgrade their systems was embedded in his DNA, and building teams, training them and outfitting them with the right tools was in essence an unexpected dream coming true.
In 2021 SDMay Solutions was upgraded to SDMTEC LLC, becoming Seth’s sole focus.
And now? The best is yet to come.
